Artist Statement

Tam Benjamin is a conceptual photographer who creates multiple layers of surface in each image, focusing on visual culture as it relates to widely recognizable places and experiences.

She utilizes vernacular objects and vintage imagery with her own photography and videos to create a dialogue about how cultural touchstones, shared nostalgia and the zeitgeist of a time or place are communicated visually.

I like to break the linear story in a photograph with multiple layers of surface”

Biography

Growing Up in a family of entrepreneurs and business owners, I learned early on to think about how my photography fits into the larger culture. My use of vintage and vernacular imagery is born from a desire for a common language. I am fascinated by how visual language is used and shared through society. Why is it that abstract and visceral imagery can communicate so much to so many?

I watch carefully when people are viewing my work to understand why and what is resonating for them, after all my work is like a visual book, and I want to make sure others can read it. When they can it is deeply gratifying. My goal is connection.

Given my background it was natural for me to pursue retail environments to exhibit and sell my work. Being present as both artist and shop owner allowed me access to interact directly with those looking at my photography. Having the opportunity to chat with customers was an added bonus and an ideal and satisfying way to earn my livelihood.

As I now move deeper into the conceptual photography space, I enjoy the freedom and challenge of being able to use more abstract elements in my work, trusting that my intention will continue to resonate and that the conversation will continue.
